China’s young fashion designers step-up a gear

The Leather and Hide Council of America and the Chinese Leather Industry Association invited fashion students to compete in a competition that features leather-based clothing and accessories. The ‘Real Leather. Stay Different.’ design competition is a part of an international program to communicate the benefits of high quality and responsibly sourced leather to the next generation of designers.

The competition received over 400 illustrated submissions. From these, leading fashion brands such as Honggu and Staccato shortlisted 45 entries. These students now have three months to produce samples for a showcase. The finals will take place in May 2020. It goes to show how leather is increasingly becoming popular among a younger designer, also illustrated by the content on the Metcha platform

Steve Sothmann, President of the Leather and Hide Council of America is excited about the interest in the competition: “The competition lets us talk with young design students the world over, to see their source of inspiration and to provide the tools to bring their vision to life. Fashion is a fast-paced, resource-intensive, and international business. We are working to promote high quality and sustainably sourced US leather as a natural, durable, and ‘slow’ material. To us, individuality and style are enduring, and that makes well-considered and brilliantly designed leather goods ever more relevant to today’s world.”
